Dr. Bernard Abeiku Arthur (FGIP)

Founder/chief Executive Officer

EXPERTISE: URBAN DEVELOPMENT/TRANSPORTATION AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

NATIONALITY: GHANAIAN  

Bernard A. Arthur is the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NiewTree Ghana Ltd. Until now, he has worked in various capacities in Ghana and abroad including, serving on the United Nations Habitat experts group of for the preparation of the New Urban Agenda, Board Member of the Scientific Committee for CODATU XV, Board Member for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s Building and Road Research Institute, served as the Vice President of Alumni International Board of the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies of Erasmus University, the Netherlands.  He has also worked with the Brussels based, Cities Alliance as a Senior Urban Specialist from 2015 to 2017. Prior to that, he worked as the Acting CEO for Ghana’s Centre for Urban Transportation from 2010-2013, as the Institutional Development Specialist for the Ghana Urban Transport Project from 2007-2010 and as a Retainer Consultant to Agence Francassie de Development for the review of the Ghana Urban Management Project (GUMMP) He has also been a visiting Professor at CNAM of Rhone Alpes and taught in Lyon, Avignon, St.Ettiene, St.Genis Pouly, Grenoble among a few. From 2015-2017 he worked as the lead consultant in the preparation of the component 3 of the Ghana 40 Year Development Plan.

He is a graduate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, He also obtained an MSc in Urban Development Management from the Institute for Housing and Urban Studies (IHS), Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Planning and Poverty Reduction Strategies from the same Institute. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Urban Planning from Blekinge Technical University in Karlskrona, Sweden as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in SME Consultancy from NISIET, Hyderabad, India.

He has been a guest speaker on many international platforms and avidly articulated his views on Urbanization, Urban Services and Smart Cities, Urban Transportation/Mobility, Local Governance. Between 2015-2016 he worked as a UN-Habitat Expert for Urban Services and Smart Cities in the drafting of the New Urban Agenda for the UN-Habitat.

Prof. George Owusu

Board Chairman

EXPERTISE: URBAN DEVELOPMENT

NATIONALITY: GHANAIAN

Professor George Owusu is an urban development expert with over 12 years of experience. His area of specialization is urbanization and urban planning, Decentralization and Local Government, Urban Youth, Enterprises and Employment among others. He worked as the dean for the Department of Geography and Resource Development, University of Ghana. He is currently a professor at the Institute of Social, Statistical and Economic Research, ISSER,

In 1999, he earned a master’s degree in social Change from the University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Trondheim, Norway. In 2005, He furthered his education to earn a PhD in Urban Geography.

Prof. George Owusu has been researching and consulting in areas such as Exploring Crime and Poverty Nexus in Urban Ghana, RurbanAfrica: Connections between Rural Areas and Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa funded by the EU, Youth and Employment: The Role of Entrepreneurship in African Economies (YEMP). He has currently been nominated by the President of Ghana as a member of the Commission of Enquiry set up to begin the process of collating views for the creation of new regions.

He currently has 63 publications to his credited, some of which include.

Dr. Kwabena Koforbour Agyeman

EXPERTISE: INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY AND MONITORING & EVALUATION ASSOCIATE

NATIONALITY: GHANAIAN

Dr. Kwabena Koforobour Agyemang is a development planner, administration and management, projects development, monitoring and evaluation, environmental management and assessment, and institutional capacity development practitioner. He holds BA (Economics and Geography) Honors degree (1992) from the Social Sciences Faculty and MSc in Development Policy and Planning (1999) form the Department of Planning of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Kumasi. He was admitted as a member of Ghana Institute of Planners in 2008.

Dr. Agyemang has worked in various capacities as a teacher, a Development Planning Officer, a Senior Programmes Officer of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a Senior Advisor of Netherland Development Organisation (SNV) and a consultant.

Mr Agyemang has vast experience in Local Governance and Training. His work as a Senior Programmes Officer of EPA gave him practical experience in Environmental Impact administration. Working as a Senior Advisor of Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) on local governance further equipped him with proficiency in providing advisory services on local governance.  He was also the local co-ordinator of the SNV/UNDP Millennium Development Goals Localisation/Alternative Livelihood Project in the Western Region.

After SNV, he worked as a private consultant, working on Environmental Assessment, Business Development Services, Organisational Development and Development Planning Issues. He was also involved in Organisational Assessment, Training Programmes Development, and training for Urban Environmental Sanitation Programme (UESP II), Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA). He is currently a lecturer at Department of Geography and Regional Planning, University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

Mathias Nuessgen

Urban Transport Expert / Associate

EXPERTISE: URBAN TRANSPORTATION

NATIONALITY: GERMAN

Mathias Nuessgen is an urban transport expert. He is the 2nd Vice Executive Director at European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST). EURIST is an NGO promoting policies that improve the environment, social and economic sustainability of transport and mobility. Mathias has been working internationally in capacity building, strategic consultancy and the initiation of implementation processes in the of field of sustainable mobility.

Derrick Akuoko Obeng

Sustainable Development Officer

EXPERTISE: SUSTAINABLE WATER AND SANITATION & WASH

Mr. Akuoko Obeng is one of the longest serving team members of the NiewTree Family. As a graduate of Environmental Studies, he has dedicated his efforts in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and in Capacity Building for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in Ghana. His strengths are in report writing, research and analysis, WASH advocacy and Climate Change. He has pursued the Green Ports Project for a while and it is anticipated that, he will complete the details for a major take-off in the coming year.

Susan Tetteh

Urban Development Officer

EXPERTISE: URBAN PLANNING / MOBILITY

Zan joined the team in 2021 and has been a very useful addition to the young and ambitious staff. A very good team player and a serious multi-tasking personnel. She is working on our Green Economy Plannning Manuals as well as On-Street Parking for selected Cities in Ghana.

Her core skills are settlement planning, mobility and Institutional Development.

Whilst working on the mandate given her from Niewtree, Zan has also been tasked to work on the Sustainable Transport ambitions. She is experimenting with the low-carbon, zero emissions efforts in electric cars, cable cars and other renewable energy transport related efforts.
